About the Tour

A pilgrimage built on structure, devotion & clarity

The ultimate goal of human life is to attain God and achieve liberation from the cycle of birth and death. For this, saints have shown various means such as penance, yoga, and chanting. Mother Narmada is the direct manifestation of Lord Shiva’s grace. Since ancient times, gods, goddesses, and ascetic-saints have performed penance on both of its banks. All the pilgrimage sites situated on the northern and southern banks of Narmada are sacred lands of penance (tapobhumi).

Out of all the rivers in India, seven rivers—Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Indus, and Kaveri—are seen as very holy. But a religious walk (parikrama) is done only for the Narmada River. This shows how special it is. Our holy books say it is good to walk around parents, temples, holy places, and towns. However, walking around the Narmada River is the biggest and hardest journey of all. It is a real test of a person’s patience and strength.

Types of Narmada parikrama :-

To do a parikrama, you must keep the holy person or place on your right side and walk in a circle around them.

This is called parikrama or pradakshina. You should walk slowly while chanting or remembering God’s name. When you do this walk peacefully with your mind focused on God, it becomes a beautiful form of prayer.

There are many ways to do this journey:

By walking on foot

By bowing down completely on the ground at every step (prostration)

By using a vehicle (like a car or bus)

Among all of these, walking barefoot (without shoes) is considered the best way. This is because when you walk, you get to visit every single holy spot and river meeting-point (sangam) on both sides of the Narmada River. It also gives you the chance to bathe in the holy water, see the shrines, and pray properly.

If you travel by vehicle, you only get to see the main holy places. Older people, sick people, or those who are physically weak and cannot walk can use a vehicle to complete their journey.
